This website is dedicated to Progressive Rock and Metal – the more complex varieties of modern music. But simpler forms of representation can also inspire me. Like the classic 12-bar Blues scheme, which has already been rolled out in countless heartbreak songs. Nevertheless, over the decades the genre has lost none of its fascination.
On the contrary: Blues Rock, without frills or artificial effects, but played with feeling and passion, is in fashion all over the world. In Europe, bands like the Belgian Black Mirrors or The Vintage Caravan from Iceland lean heavily on the retro trend and are enjoying great success.
Black Soul Rainbow: honest, handmade music
Now a duo from overseas could also cause a sensation with honest, handmade music: Black Soul Rainbow. The name of the project already suggests that musically and lyrically all situations in life are explored, including the bad ones – precisely what defines true Blues.
It is quite possible that you meet the Canadian Di Studenberg (vocals) and the native Australian D.M Thompson (guitar / vocals) on stage in some corner of Europe in the next months. The two are currently on the road in Bulgaria and appear at festivals as well as in clubs and bars.
Playing live – that’s what counts for the band
“Our life is to play live”, the female singer explains the reasons why she and her partner dared to leap across the pond in an extremely difficult phase for artists. “We are scraping the corners of the earth for whatever remnants of live music we can find”, says Di Studenberg, commenting on the current situation with a wink – and yet remains optimistic for the near future, including her latest incarnation Black Soul Rainbow.
She and Thompson met by chance a few years ago when the Australian, who was mainly a producer back then, heard the Canadian singing to herself in a cafe. He immediately asked her if she was a professional singer. The chance encounter turned into a mutual musical career after the two had recorded their first songs together and realized that the chemistry between them was right.
Influences from Lenny Kravitz to Howlin Wolf
Black Soul Rainbow now is another dream project of hers and Thompson, says Di Studenberg. Last year, during a few shows with their other groups in Los Angeles, the idea came up to look for an outlet for their shared passion of Blues Rock. The result is the new band, in which influences like Lenny Kravitz, Jimi Hendrix, Dan Reed Network or even Blues legend Howlin Wolf are sensitively processed into something completely independent.
Even during their stay in Europe, the two are writing and recording songs for the first BSR album „What We Leave Behind“. The first single from the debut already has a name too: „Dirty“ will be released in late 2021. A video accompanying the song is also in the works.
